Quilts of Valour

At the June 17, 2015 meeting of the Orillia Quilters’ Guild, thirty-five Quilts of Valour were presented to Jan Easton, Vice President of Quilts of Valour-Canada Society. A challenge was issued by the 2014 Orillia Quilters’ Guild president to guild members to make quilts for this worthy cause. The quilts are a minimum size of 60” x 72” and are made of 100% cotton. The quilts are distributed to active and retired injured Canadian Armed Forces personnel, recognizing them for their service and commitment to our country. Many of these men and women are suffering from PTSD. Since 2006, over 6,000 Quilts of Valour have been made by quilters across Canada. The recipients of the quilts are chosen by committees on Canadian Forces bases. There is a two year wait list to receive one of these quilts. Jan Easton’s presentation explained the distribution process of these quilts and how receiving one of these quilts makes a huge difference to the injured Canadian Armed Forces member or veteran. Many veterans treasure their Quilt of Valour is because it is a tangible representation of the fact that people cared enough about them to spend so much time making the quilts.
